Sterling Track at Pioneer Indoor Meet

Sterling girls and boys track teams competed in the 2024 Pioneer Indoor Meet at Doane University on March 20. The Girls Team finished 8th with 18 points. The Boys Team finished 4th with 54 points.Individual results are as follows:

T-birds Claim Championship at Auburn Golf Invite

The Thunderbirds of Johnson County Central took the top two individual spots, finishing with a team score of 330 to edge Auburn by seven strokes at the 2024 Auburn Invite on Thursday, March 28 at the Auburn Country Club.

JCC Boys Track Has 24 on the Team, Girls Have 21 Members

Johnson County Central’s Boys Track Team has 24 boys out for the 2024 season. “It is exciting to see a large number of boys participating. We only have one returning senior on the team, Colby Strecker, with the remaining members consisting of seven juniors, nine sophomores and seven freshmen,” said JCC’s Head Boys Track Coach Angie Huskey. “Despite having a very young team, our numbers will allow us to have representation in every event at most track meets this year.”

Sterling Returns Several Experienced Letterwinners for Both Track Teams

Sterling High School has 19 boys and 7 girls out for track this year. There are four 2023 State qualifiers returning for the 2024 season. Wyatt Rathe was on the 4x400 gold medal team and qualified in the 200m dash. Jesus Gonzalez-Castillo was on the 4x400 relay team as well and placed 7th in the 800m run. Collin Kinney also received a gold medal as part of the 4x400 m relay. Lauren Harms went to state in the discus throw and shot put. She placed 7th in the discus.

Winners of Ruritans’ Chili Cooking Contest

The Sterling Ruritans held a Chili Cooking Contest at Scott’s Place on Saturday, March 9. Contestants entered their varieties of chili in either the mild or spicy category and the public was invited to come taste the offerings and vote on their favorites. Winners in the Spicy Chili were: 1st Place, Dalton Clark; 2nd Place, Chuck Wingert; 3rd Place, Sean Moss of Sterling.

JCC Boys Golf Returns Several Letterwinners

Johnson County Central Schools’ will return 10 golfers from our 2023 boys golf team, including seven letterwinners. The five golfers who played in districts last season all return. “That team placed 4th, so we have a goal to improve on that and place in the top three, which will earn us a spot at the state tournament,” said Ben Swanson, head boys golf coach.

JCC Youth Wrestling Season

The Johnson County Central (JCC) Youth Wrestling Club is wrapping up their 2023 – 2024 season. The AAU State Meet which was held on March 9th and 10th and the Huskerland Tournament that will be held on March 23rd and 24th are the final tournaments of the season. The results of those tournaments will be posted at a later date.
